It’s a very special penguin chick update for Penguin Awareness Day! Our two newest—and floppiest—African penguins, Tule (pictured here) and Piper, are doing great behind the scenes and are just starting to explore the world around them.

According to Aviculturist Kim, they weigh about 4.5 pounds each (that’s almost adult-sized!) and are starting to lose the down feathers on their wings, head and chest, transitioning from their epic fluff ball stage, to dapper full-feathered plumage.

Tule and Piper hatched here as part of our collaboration with The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to recover these endangered South African birds. Learn more about this penguimportant work.

Two endangered penguins hatched at the Aquarium recently!

Both peeped their way into the world on January 19 and are currently visible in our African penguin colony in the Splash Zone gallery. The chicks will remain on exhibit for about three weeks or until they start leaving the nest. Then they’ll be moved behind the scenes for their safety, and return to the Splash Zone after a few months, when they’re a bit older and can swim. Stay tuned for more updates!

Happy Penguin Awareness Day! These birds may not be able to fly in the air, but watch them speed through the sea to grab a snack. Using their wings as flippers and their feet as rudders, they gracefully chase down schools of fish. Let’s hear it for penguins!

We can help these endangered birds by protecting the ocean habitats they depend on—and by choosing ocean-friendly seafood. Download the free Seafood Watch app for help finding sustainable seafood and sushi.
